Britten’s Phantasy Quartet blends English pastoral charm with his blossoming modernist sensibility, Carter brings playful counterpoint and melodic warmth to his pivotal neoclassic Wind Quintet, and Cage offers an enchanting Nocturne that leaves nothing to chance. Beethoven’s A Major Violin Sonata frees us from Classical molds with quicksilver charm, and Strauss’ glorious Piano Quartet soars with glimpses of heroes’ journeys to come.
